It’s been 10 months since Warhammer: The Old World charged into our lives. By most accounts the game has been a resounding success. From my experience, the game has transformed my local scene from disparate players finding each other on the internet to a tightly connected, enthused and downright wholesome bunch of wargamers. Since Warhammer: The Old World launched in January I’ve fought countless battles, played in two tournaments, partaken in a slow grow league and, most importantly, met dozens of lovely people. It feels like the game has energised a long-dormant slice of the market. Long may it last.
As we all get reacquainted with our beloved rank and flank wargame, it’s inevitable that players will look to experiment: from siege battles and naval warfare to custom armies of infamy, long-lost units and wacky campaigns. When you pitch small soldiers against each other, the mind naturally wanders to these things. Though the literature of modern day Games Workshop focuses leans less towards house rules, make no mistake: the players will make it so. This is the generation of PVA fingers and cardboard tree trunks, who took Rick Priestley’s appendix “On House Rules” as a call to arms.
Custom Scenario: Madness in the Maelstrom
This is my attempt at a custom Warhammer: The Old World scenario. Madness in the Maelstrom is an arcane war between two armies that are fizzing with wizards. As the title suggests, the scenario is quite bonkers. Players are rewarded for killing enemy casters and seizing a forcefield of magic in the centre of the battlefield. Victory lies in the Maelstrom, but beware: the more spells cast, the thicker the thunder.
And finally, I should hope it goes without saying that this is fan-made and unofficial!
Did you try the scenario? Was it the arcane bloodbath you expected? Did somebody release the spawn? Comments and feedback welcome.
